7 Reasons Your Mother Will Always Be Your Best Friend.
In light of this being Mother's Day, I wanted to celebrate the day with reasons why you will never have a best friend like your good old mum.
1) She dealt with you during your "teenage angst" years.
And trust me, that wasn't a pretty sight. Think of what you're like now with hormones flying around all over the place, and this is you with years of practice and somewhat in control of it. Now think back to when hormones hit you like a ton of bricks. The fact that your mum even survived through those years without driving you into the middle of nowhere and leaving you there is an achievement, let alone the fact that she still loves you. I mean, how??
2) She's taken care of you when you've barely been able to take care of yourself.
Whether that was when you were 5 and with a really bad stomach bug, or when you were 15 and had 1 too many bottles of Smirnoff Ice, she was there to pick you up and clean you off. The number of states your mother has seen you in is catastrophic, and don't be tricked into thinking now that you're (somewhat) mature and living on your own, that the days of your mum seeing you an absolute mess are over. There are still many, many more to come.
3) She's one of the few people on this Earth you can have a disastrous fall out with and call her a hundred unrepeatable words, who will be willing to call a truce and make up the next day.
Now falling out with anyone is horrible, but there's something kind of heartbreaking about having an argument with your mum. I'm not talking about one of those wee tiffs over, "OMG MUM! WHY DID YOU COMMENT THAT ON *insert crushes name*'S FACEBOOK PICTURE OF US?!! YOU HAVE TOTALLY CROSSED A LINE!!". I mean one of those arguments that we've all been through at least one point in our lives, where we get really, really, nasty. The sort of argument that if you had it with a friend, you would likely never talk to that person again. With your mum though, all it takes is for you both to calm down and suddenly you realise that whatever the argument was over was stupid, and immature, and both of you just say sorry after the count of 3 and have some cake and the entire thing is forgotten about. Bliss.
4) You can tell her anything, and there will be no judgement.
Okay there will be a little judgement depending on the magnitude of the secret, maybe a sigh, or a slight head shake, or (God forbid you do something that merits a) "Dear God child". But for the most part, once you tell your entire secret to you mum and she's done with giving you that look, your mum is one of the few people who can give you good, proper advice, no matter what it is you need advice on. An old boyfriend crossed a line? As opposed to going to your best friend for help, your mum will give you advice that probably won't land you in trouble with the police.
5) Thanks to her, you have some effing cute baby pictures.
While there are a few *cough* lots, sorry mum *cough* bad choices of ensemble that you ended up in thanks to some questionable judgement, there are plenty of photos which you can't help but make very high pitched "awhhh!!" noises while looking at. Whether it was a gorgeous wee matching dress and bonnet set, or a head to toe 101 Dalmations outfit like the one I'm sporting below, your mum will no doubt have taken plenty of cracking photos of you through the years.
My sister, brother, and me, posing like we're trying to shoot an album cover. Swag.
6) She tells you her honest opinion on everything. Whether you want it or not.
Dress showing too much bum? Dating a guy who's a bit of a dick? Friend taking advantage of you? Your mum knows best, and will always have your back. At times it feels like she's out to get you ("Yeah but mum, this is fashion!!!") but your mum is one of the few people who is completely impartial when it comes to her views on the goings on in your life. If someone is mistreating you, she's there to open your eyes to it. It sucks at first but in the long run your mum has saved you plenty of hurt and tears over the years.
7) As much as you'd hate to admit it at times, you just couldn't live without her.
Your mum is one of the only people who genuinely just has your best interests at heart, and wants you to succeed in everything that you do. She's been your rock during some of the hardest moments in your life, and been a reality check when you're getting too big for your boots. Your mum is always there to make you see what's really happening around you, and to remind of how much you're actually worth (ten million times more than that guy made you feel, it really is his loss). She's always the first person you want to share your good news with, and she's always so truly ecstatic for you.
So today, I just want to take the opportunity to say I love you mum.
